Summer 2011

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? (Matt. 7:3)

Dear Praying Friends and Ministry Partners,

God holds each one of us accountable for our actions. This concept has been an ongoing struggle for the members of our church and in their community because they are quick to point out when someone else is doing something wrong. Likewise, when those in the community see the sin in the lives of the members, they often use that as an excuse not to come to church. We must ensure we have a right relationship with the Lord before we begin pointing out the faults of someone else.

Special Request

We have a lot to share this month, but first we wanted to ask you to pray for one of the families in Luncsoara. A man named Sorin, who was the father of six children, took his own life on 10/1. This is a terrible situation for the family as the lives of the children will be affected the most. Their mother had moved out of the community some time ago because of the abuse, and she recently remarried. At this point their grandmother is making arrangements to seek custody of the children. Several of the children come to our services regularly, so we would hate to see them placed in an orphanage where their future is much less certain. Would you please pray for this family?

VBS Ministry

For two weeks in July Ruth and our teammate, Kim Warner, led VBS in each of the four Gypsy churches. Ruth teaching the animal lesson during VBS in LuncsoaraEach day Kim taught a Bible lesson from the life of Daniel, while Ruth taught the Bible verse and animal lesson complete with artwork by Celeste and sound effects! The children loved it. Ruth and Kim received additional help from some guests. The Warners hosted a teacher through BMM's FirstLook program, while we hosted a student through TeenConnect.

TeenConnect Program

We thoroughly enjoyed the time we had with Sarah, our short-term student who spent three weeks with us through BMM's TeenConnect program. Our girls really enjoyed getting to know Sarah. It was like having a big sister, and she was always willing to spend time with them.

Sarah hit the ground running as we were in the midst VBS. She also taught a Sunday School class and played her violin in several of the services. It was a real treat as the Gypsies love the violin, but we do not have anyone in the church that plays.

Sarah (back row, middle) with some of the children. Cale (front left) is one of the boys who lost his father on 10/1Now Sarah is back home, and we heard she is studying Romanian at school this year. May God continue to use her time with us to guide her future, and may the Lord lay Romania on the hearts of other students and young people. If you know a student that is interested in missions and has a heart for forgotten people like the Gypsies, we would be happy to talk to them about short-term opportunities. Now is the perfect time to begin making preparations for next summer.

Summer School Program

The Summer School Program was a huge success. We met with each child for 15-20 minutes every Thursday afternoon for seven weeks. The children eagerly awaited their turn. Scenes from summer school in LuncsoaraThe classes covered reading, writing, math, classroom behavior, hygiene, and logic/problem solving. Celeste wanted to help too, so she created her own class to teach English to some of the older children. Sarah captured these photos for us.

Forty-four children completed the course and were eligible to receive backpacks with clothes, shoes, and school supplies. Kim Warner leading singing during the special service School began on September 12, so on Sunday, September 11, we held a special service with over 90 attending, including many parents and families that do not normally come.

Thank you for your partnership in praying for Romania.

Dave with Tarzan The work at the wood company has ended for the men from our church. One the men who lost his job is Tarzan. Unfortunately Tarzan hurt his hand when he got angry and put it through a window. It has been a hard lesson for him as it kept him off work for two weeks. He has also lost the use of his index finger. He continues to be faithful at church every week, and we have been able to have him do some work at our house, which helps him and the owners. Please pray for Tarzan that he continues to grow in his faith and that he will be able to find steady work during the winter.

Kid's Corner

Celeste and Amber are continuing to have an impact on the children in Luncsoara. Celeste spoke to one of the boys she is friends with named Vladuti about his salvation in light of the death of Sorin the day before. He did not know if he would go to heaven or not. Pray for more opportunities for Celeste to witness and that he would come to know the Lord as Savior.

The girls are also involved in a children's choir through one of the local Romanian Baptist churches.

Amber (first row, fifth from the right) and Celeste (second row, second from the right)In July they had the opportunity to join with children all around the area to perform in a concert at the children's park in Oradea. They really enjoyed learning the songs, which were all taken directly from the Bible.
